...Great article. I'm sharng it on my fbk page.

I especially like the bit "It is his mental picture of himself that is most at fault here." It has been my experience (both with myself and with my pupils) that self-image is mirrored to a T in our bodies. We seem compelled to believe that we must go down with gravity as we get older. How refreshing it is to see older folks going up with gravity! Gives us all hope! I love the idea of allowing the fingers to play on the wheel while asking for my wrists to be free.

I have recently been exploring "negative or inhibitory directions" first put forth by Missy Vineyard. One morning in some particularly grueling Washington DC traffic the direction "I am not driving" arrived. Playing with this lightly over time has introduced ease and freedom while "stuck" behind the wheel.

These small moments can and do add up.Patrick Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11932466748852157863noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2033678697891834741.post-6744238649063586202012-06-10T18:08:07.429+10:002012-06-10T18:08:07.429+10:00Hi,

Lots of useful tips for experimenting.
I have found it very useful to ask the pupil to see what happens if she/he let gravity do the job. A lot of unecessary tension can come from using muscles to try to bend when all that is needed is release of hips, knees and ankles. The movement in the joints of the legs can take care of themselves, leaving us free to observe the lengtening and widening back.

Let gravity do the job, and don't decide in advance what the resulting movement is going to be like!

Regards
Halvard Heggdal
Alexander Technique teacher
NorwayHalvard Heggdalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17929883678257443159noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2033678697891834741.post-78831974440202517872012-05-02T19:24:43.746+10:002012-05-02T19:24:43.746+10:00Very thorough article and nicely written!
People ...Very thorough article and nicely written!
People when they look up (and if they are moving with attention,) they tend to generally bring their head more in line with their body and stop craning their necks out in front. Use the quality of a listing of the body movement that happens as as it attempts to get underneath the head when looking up in an interesting experiment. A person can launch a forward motion with this easy quality of listing as the face comes forward after having looked up. This way it is possible for mostly anyone to get a pretty good rendition of what hands-on A.T. teacher can offer. Of course, the ability to sustain improvements is what is possible that might come from such a simple experiment. My Half Ofhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02535428140881202204noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2033678697891834741.post-44585138835016220362012-05-02T16:27:06.739+10:002012-05-02T16:27:06.739+10:00This comment has been removed by the author.Jim Crosthwaitehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06683027518643433707noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2033678697891834741.post-41710202551614469922011-12-09T03:50:30.831+11:002011-12-09T03:50:30.831+11:00Lovely!
